What surveys are included in HSSC?
- SOLAS - Safety construction, safety equipment, safety radio, passenger ship safety
- Load Line
- MARPOL
- Ballast water management

- BCH Code (Dangerous Chemical (construction))
- Polar code
- IGF Code - Using gases or low flashpoint fuels
What are the 5 types of survey?
- Initial
- Annual
- Intermediate
- Periodic
- Renewal
When should surveys be completed?
Surveys are completed within a survey window of 3 months before and after the anniversary date of the initial survey.
Can survey certification expiry be extended?
Certificates can be extended by up to 3 months if survey is not possible, or 1 month on short sea voyages.
However the new certificate expiry will be calculated from the original anniversary date.
How often should the ships bottom be inspected?
At least twice in the 5 years survey period.
One of which should be on or after the 4th anniversary.
No more than 36 months between successive inspections.
One of which may be carried out in water for vessels up to 15 years old.
What is included in an initial survey?
A complete inspection of all items relating to the certificate before the ship is put in service
What is included in a periodical survey?
A full inspection and tests of items including logbooks, manuals, certificates and other required documentation relating to the certificate
What is included in an intermediate survey?
An inspection of SPECIFIED items relating to the certificate
What is included in an annual survey?
A general inspection of items relating to the certificate to ensure they have been maintained. Certificate examination and visual inspection.
What is included in a renewal survey?
The same as a periodical - A full inspection of items related to the certificate and issue of a new certificate
When is an additional survey carried out?
When machinery or modification is made relating to any certificate or the structure of the ship
Following incident or damage to the vessel
Who should the Master contact after any damage or incident affecting the safety or integrity of the ship?
The administration, the appointed surveyor or the recognised organisation to investigate if an additional survey is required.
What is a condition of class?
A recommendation made in the case of a damaged or defective classification survey item which is not so serious as to jeopardise class, but which is sufficiently serious to require rectification within a prescribed period to maintain class.
