What is a marine casualty?

A

An event or sequence of events which result in

  1. Death of or serious injury to a person
  2. Loss of a person from a ship
  3. Loss, presumed loss or abandonment of a ship
  4. Material damage affecting the structural integrity, performance, operational characteristics or infrastructure of the ship.
  5. The ship was unfit to proceed to sea or requires flag state approval or condition of class to proceed.
  6. Breakdown of the ship requiring towage
  7. Stranding, disabling or collision
  8. Pollution
  9. Material damage to marine infrastructure

What is a marine incident?

A

An event or series of events which do not result in a casualty but had the potential to or if left unchanged have the potential to including

  • a close quarters situation requiring urgent action
  • Any event with potential to cause serious injury
  • a fire with no material damage
  • Unintended temporary grounding on soft mud
  • MOB with no serious injury

How do I report to MAIB?

A
  • Call the reporting helpline
  • Complete an online form (ARF Form)
