Who do MLC Hours of work regulations apply to?
UK legislation - Any person, including a master, who is employed or engaged or works in any capacity on board a ship and whose normal place of work is on a ship.
What are the hours of work regulations?
- Minimum 77 hours of rest in any 7 day period
- Minimum 10 hours of rest in any 24 hour period
- Schedule of hours of rest posted on board ship
- Hours of rest are recorded and maintained

What are the 4 categories of waters in UK?
Cat A - Narrow rivers and canals with depth less than 1.5m
Cat B - Wider rivers and canals with depth over 1.5m and sig wave height less than 0.6m
Cat C - Tidal rivers and estuaries and large deep lakes/lochs where sig wave height < 1.2m (Portsmouth Harbour)
Cat D - Tidal rivers and estuaries where sig wave height < 2m

What exclusions can be granted as part of SPS code?
A ship can apply for an exemption certificate exempting “special workers” on an SPS ship from MLC requirements as non seafarers.
