S1W5-Witch Flashcards
Witches
Cause by Ergot fungus
Continent they were burned but in Britain they were hung
Long history between psychopharmacology, witchcraft and mental illness
Tarantism
Associated with a traditional dance in Italy and psychotropic drugs
Today would be recognised as a delusion in DSM
1500s – Paracelcus (werewolves)
Lunacy aka Moon Madness
Associated with werewolves
Thought witches turned men into werewolves in association with Satan
Werewolves now called delusional or schizophrenic/psychotic
1973 – Rosenham (sane in insane places)
Sent students into mental hospitals pretending to have the same symptoms
Said voices were empty, hollow, thud
No one picked up on the fact that this is not what psychotic delusion voices sound like
Drapetomania
Disease that caused slaves to run away from plantations
Treatment was to pour hot oil on their body and beat them but a symptom was lesions on the skin.
They never considered that the hot oil was causing the lesions
Homosexuality –Evelynn Hooker
Study showing that homosexuals/asexuals were no more mentally disordered or suffering than heterosexuals
Passive aggressive disorder
Symptom was that housewives dawdled and didn’t have dinner ready for their husbands
New DSM disorders
Disruptive Mood Regulation Disorder – abnormal level of temper tantrums
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder – PMS that is so severe it can cause psychosis
Hoarding Disorder – previous considered as OCD but is now separate
DSM Set aside for further study diagnosis
Things that were proposed for DSM-V but didn’t get enough support
Caffeine Addiction Disorder
Internet Gaming Disorder
There is poor consistency in diagnosis with some people using DSM and some people using ICD.
Is mental illness real?
fMRI =increased cerebral spinal fluid in schizophrenia
People with BPD can recognise subtle facial expressions quicker
BPD = amygdala is bigger and so they are more fearful than most and therefore misinterpret what they are seeing
BPS understanding psychosis and schizophrenia (2016)
Came from clinical psych and is controversial
Says we need to redefine mental illness and that it is something that can be helped with therapy (fighting against NHS)
Some people say illness is part of their personality that they wouldn’t want to be without but even they benefit from therapy
