S1W1Pers Flashcards
Eysenck (40s)
Openness to experience best predictor of artistic tastes.
Good predictor for traditional paintings.
Extraversion linked to radicalism and liking of modern art.
Preference for abstract art related to field dependence, conservatism and locus of control.
Zuckerman
High sensation seeking favoured complex and asymmetric design
Sensation seeking better predictor of taste than big 5, with the exception of openness to experience.
Rentfrow and Gosling (2003)
Small group given information about large group used it to predict their personality.
Large group did Big 5 and listed ten favourite songs.
Small group listened to top ten lists and estimated Big 5.
Found they were significantly correlated except conscientiousness.
Extraversion correlated with vocal amount so may prefer sound of human voice.

Delsing et al. (2008)
Based on ‘uses and gratifications’ media theory.
Individuals choose music that reflects their personal qualities or satisfy their mood.
> 2000 Dutch adolescents assessed on 11 categories of music which were reduced to 4 factors.
Factors were rock, elite, urban and dance/pop.
Found personality predicted the factors (E = dance/urban) (A = elite) (C = rock) (O = rock/elite) (ES = elite).
Chamorro-Premuzic, Fagan & Furnham (2010)
Treated emotional intelligence (EI) as a personality trait.
Background use predicted liking for social music
Emotional regulation use predicted liking for sad music, but not happy music.
Cognitive use did not predict liking for complex music but openness to experience did.
EI not related to emotional uses nor to liking for happy or sad music.
EI too similar to emotional stability therefore they cancel each other out.
Chamorro-Premuzic, Burke, Hsu & Swami (2010)
Rated preferences, emotional valence and complexity (predicted by openness and sensation seeking)
O = liking for colourful and complex paintings
Neuroticism = liking for emotionally negative paintings
Big Five only explained 5% of overall variance in liking.
