Ropes and Knots Flashcards
What is Life Safety Rope?
Rope used for raising, lowering and supporting firefighters in training and in the field
.
What kind of rope is the only one approporate for life safety rope?
Block creel construction
Can life safety ropes be used again after exposure to heat or after an impact load?
No
What is utility rope?
Rope used for lifting equipment, typically life safety rope that has been downgraded to utility rope.
What is the NFPA standard for Utility Rope?
There is none. It is up to the firefighters to determine if it becomes unserviceable.
Are natural fibre ropes allowed to be life safety ropes?
No, only utility ropes because they rot and lose strength when wet.
What are the advantages of synthetic rope over natural fibre?
- Water resistant
- Longer life span
- Lighter weight and greater strength
- Easily maintained
What are the advantages of natural fibre rope?
More resistant to UV degradation
Does not melt in heat.
List the four types of rope construction
Kernmantle
Laid
Braided
Braid-0n-Braid
How is a Laid rope constructed?
Two or three strands are twisted together. they can only be used as utility ropes.
How is Braided Rope constructed?
Multiple strands are braided together. There is no internal core so it is easily impacted by abrasions. Mostly used as utility rope.
How is Braid-on-braid rope constructed?
A braided core is placed within a braided sheath. can be used for life safety rope but is more commonly used as utility rope as it is not as resistant to abraisons.
How is Kernmantle rope constructed?
A non braided core is surrounded with a thick braided sheath. it is the primary rope used in life safety rope as it is the strongest and most abraision resistant.
What is the maximum amount of time that a rope can be under a sustained load?
Two days
What are the two types of webbing?
Flat and tubular
