Fire Hose Flashcards
What are the two main types of fire hose?
Supply hose and attack hose
What is supply hose used for?
Transporting water from hydrant or other sources to the apparatus
What is attack hose used for?
Water is pressurized by the apparatus and fed through attack hose to the incident, where it can be used to :
- Supply the nozzle crew
- Supply the fire department connection (FDC) connected to a building.
- Supply a nozzle crew from a building standpipe.
How is the hose diameter measured?
From the inside diameter of the hose.
How long are lengths of fire hose?
fifty and one hundred feet, but more commonly fifty feet
What are the two kinds of intake hose?
Soft sleeve and Hard suction hose
True or false. All fire departments in North America are absolutely required to have hose that follows the NFPA 1961
False, while it is strongly recommended, some fire departments do not have NFPA certified equipment, which requires other fire departments to carry adaptors.
What is a shank?
The part of the connection that does not move and is not part of the threads. The male shank has rocker lugs to assist with grip, while the female shank has no rocker lugs because it has them on the swivel.
What is a higbee cut and a higbee indicator?
A higbee cut prevents cross threading when the threads are connected.
The higbee indicator indicates where the higbee cut begins.
What is a spanner wrench?
A wrench used to couple the male and female couplings togehter.
What are the three kinds of lugs that can be found on fire hose couplings?
Rocker, Recessed and Pin
Where are recessed lugs commonly found?
Booster fire hose because recessed lugs prevent abraisions. You need a special pin spanner wrench to uncouple recessed lugs.
What are the two kinds of non-threaded couplings?
Quarter turn and Storz
True or false. Quarter turn nonthreaded coupling is primarily used for large hoses.
False the quarter turn is mostly used in wildfire operations. The Storz is the nonthreaded coupling that is primarily used for large hoses.
What are the advantages of nonthreaded couplings?
Connect quickly
No risk of cross threading
Hose can be connected from either side, so loading the hose for proper orientation is unnecessary
What are some of the disadvantages of nonthreaded couplings?
Hose can become uncoupled more easily than threaded hose couplings.
They need adapters to connect to fire hydrants, which takes longer
Dirt and other debris can prevent a tight seal
How often does fire hose need to be inspected?
90 days before being put in service for the first time and annually after that.
True or false. Woven-jacket style hose requires more thorough cleaning than rubber lined hose because dirt and other debris can get into the fabric.
True
True or false, while hose washing machines do a better job of cleaning the hose, it cleans them much more slowly.
False, a hose washing machine is often faster than a firefighter at washing fire hose.
True or false, only woven-jacket fire hose needs to be dried before being reloaded on the apparatus.
True, the performance and quality of the rubber lined hose is not affected by water. but woven -jacket hose can rot if left wet.
True or false, it is ok to let hose dry in the sun as long as it is not outside for longer than necessary.
True, never dry any type of hose in the sun for longer than it needs to as the UV rays will deteriotate them.
True or false, it is important to protect the female coupling on threaded couplings to prevent the threads from being damaged.
False it is important to protect the male coupling as it has the threads.
Should the female or male coupling be inside the rolled hose?
The male to protect the threads
How long can hose be stored on the apparatus without being used before it requires an inspection?
6 months
