Medicines (Pharmacies) (Responsible pharmacists) Regulations 2008
- Law that holds the pharmacist accountible for the workings of the pharmacy and if legislation has been breached
Responsible pharmacist
- To be able to conduct a retail pharmacy lawfully a registered pharmacist must be in charge of the registered pharmacy
- They are the responsible pharmacist
What is a responsible pharmacist required to do
- Secure the safe running of the pharmacy
- Display a notice with name and registration number and that you are incharge of the pharmacy
- Must complete a pharmacy record
- Establish keep and maintain pharmacy procedures for safe working
How does the responsible pharmacist ensure safe and effective practice
- Incharge of the pharmacy at that time
- Steps need to be put in place to ensure safe and effective running of the pharmacy
Display the notice
- Pharmacist name
- Registration number
- Fact that you are incharge of the pharmacy at that time
- Clear and professional
Pharmacy record
- Audit trail of who is accountable for safe running of pharmacy
- Allow to identify responsible pharmacist at that time
- Accurate and at the time by responsible pharmacist
- Accurate record even at absence
Requirements of pharmacy record
- Name of pharmacist and registration number
- Date and time that the pharmacist is responsible
- Date and time where pharmacist became non responsible
- Date and time of absence concider time when the pharmacist left and came back
Keeping a pharmacy record
- Pharmacy record must be kept for at least 5 years
- Available at the pharmacy it relates to
- Must be in written electronic or both format
- Back up electronic copy so it isn’t lost
Alterations to pharmacy record
- Who made the alteration and when the amendment was made
- Responsible pharmacist is required to make personal entry on pharmacy record
Example of responsible pharmacist absence
- To see patients in consultation rooms in the non registered area of the pharmacy
- Participate in meeting with the GP
- Visit patient in care home or residential care home to advise on medicines
How long can a responsible pharmacist be absent for?
- Maximum if 2 hours during pharmacy working hours
- More than 1 responsible pharmacist then max two hours shared between
- Do not remove notice if intending to remain as the responsible pharmacist
Arrangements required for absence
- Only absent if the pharmacy can continue to run safely
- Remain contactable with pharmacy staff - if not arrange another staff but must be another responsible pharmacist
- Able to return to pharmacy with promptness
When responsible pharmacist is present you can
- Proffesionally check the legality of medicines
- Sale and supply of pharmacy medication
- Sale and supply of prescription only medicines such as handing out and dispensing
- Supply of PGD meds
- Wholesale of medicines
- Emergency supply by request of patient

- Generate dispensing label
- Taking medicines off dispensing shelf
- Assembly of item
- Labelling of containers with dispensing label
- Accuracy checking
Activities when responsible pharmacist is absent
- Sale of GSL medication
- Processing waste stock medicines or patient returned medicine
