responding to injuries Flashcards
first responder define
first person to get to the inured person
what does the first responder have to follow
protocol
what does protocol determine
if injured person is able to carry on playing or should be removed from game
S.A.L.T.A.P.S
- Stop
- Ask
- Look
- Touch
- Active
- Passive
- Strength
stop - explain
stop continuing to play game/sport
ask - explain
ask player what happened, where, how, how feel (assuming conscious) - may indicate severity of injury
look - explain
look fro obvious signs of injury - bruising, swelling, bleeding, deformity, objects?
touch - explain
identify area of injury/pain - may indicate injury & severity
active - explain
can player move area themselves or not? full range of movement?
passive - explain
can player only move with your help? full range of movement?
strength - explain (3)
does player maintain original strength?
can they move it normally?
can they put pressure through it?
if can -> continue?
what does S.A.L.T.A.P.S determine
if player should come off or continue playing
what is P.R.I.C.E used for
acute management of soft tissue injuries
P.R.I.C.E
- Protect
- Rest
- Ice
- Compress
- Elevate
protect - explain (2)
- protect injury from further damage
- using support or splint
rest - explain (3)
(PRICE)
- rest injury (stop playing) -
- reintroduce movement gradually
- prevents delaying recovery & atrophy
ice - explain (4)
- apply ice to painful area with cold compress such as ice or frozen peas
- not directly onto skin - need protective layer between
- reduces swelling
- for 20 mins every 2-3 hrs
compress - explain (3)
- compress area with elastic bandage (tubular?)
- limits swelling & movement
- don’t leave on when asleep
elevate - explain
- elevate injury above level of heart
- keep supported
- reduces blood flow to injured area
(may help prevent blood clots if not mobile)
what do 6R’s do
recognise concussion
6R’s
- Recognise
- Remove
- Refer
- Rest
- Recover
- Return
Recognise - explain (5)
symptoms:
- Dizzyness
- Confused
- Nausea/sick
- Memory loss
- Unconscious (10% of people)
Remove - explain
remove player from field of play immediately
Refer - explain
refer to medically qualified professional or doctor - trained in head injuries
Rest - explain
(6R’s)
rest (don’t play) until symptom free - e.g. rugby return to play protocol - 23 days
Recover - explain (3)
- return to ‘full game’ gradually
- non-contact
- gradually build up intensity
Return - explain
- return to play if symptom free
- follow gradual return to play protocol
