rehabilitation of injury - not completed Flashcards
rehabilitation of injury define (2)
- restoring full physical function after injury has occurred
- enable player to return to play in same physical condition as before injury
stages of rehabilitation
stage 1: early
stage 2: mid
stage 3: late
what happens in early stage of rehabilitation (3)
- injury (hard/soft tissue) recovers/heals
- gentle exercise
- don’t do too much too early
what happens in mid stage of rehabilitation (2)
- progressively load bones or connective tissues
- increase strength
what happens in late stage of rehabilitation (2)
- full strength restored
- preparing to play
what injury is stretching used to treat
soft tissue
stretching in acute phase of recovery (immediately after injury)
no stretching
stretching in mid phase of recovery (3)
- after swelling, bruising, bleeding has done down
- gentle stretches
- no jerky or bouncy movements
stretching in late phase of recovery (2)
- increase joint RoM
- use proprioneuralfacilitation stretching - inhibit stretch reflex - enable stretch of muscle - lengthen muscle - increase flexibility
stretching in long term (2)
- maintain/increase range of movement around joint
- active (by yourself) & passive (someone helps) stretches
what is rehabilitation of injury (2)
- process of restoring full physical function after injury has occurred
- enables player to return to play in same physical condition as before injured
what is atrophy
muscles get smaller & weaker due to not training for at least 3 weeks
what does a massage do (5)
- move fluids & nutrients to damaged area to encourage healing
- removes waste products
- improves connective tissue elasticity
- breaks down scar tissue which increases elasticity
- reduces pain - reduces DOMS
what is cold therapy treatment + e.g.
applying ice (or cold) to an injury
- e.g. ice bath, ice vest, ice pack, cry-chambers, etc.
effects of cold therapy treatment (3)
reduce:
- swelling
- inflammation
- blood flow to affected area - arterioles in affected area will vasoconstrict
when should cold therapy treatment be used (2)
- ASAP after injury occurred
- 20 mins every 1-2 hrs for a number of weeks after injury
what is heat therapy treatment
applying heat to an affected area
effects of heat therapy treatment (4)
- arteries vasodilator - increased blood flow to affected area
- reduce tension
- reduce stiffness
- reduce pain
increased blood flow = increased healing
examples of heat therapy treatment (4)
- heat packs
- hot towels
- heat rubs
- warm water immersion
when should heat therapy treatment not be used + why
early days of recovery because it increases swelling
what is contrast therapy
use of alternate hot & cold therapy
when is contrast therapy used
later stages of recovery (after acute phase)
effects of contrast therapy (2)
- cold phase - vaso-constriction - decrease swelling
- heat phase - vast-dilation - increased blood flow & nutrients - helps healing
what has research shown about contrast therapy
more effective than just hot or cold therapy in later stages of recovery
effects of anti-inflammatory drugs as treatment (3)
- reduced inflammation
- reduced pain
- reduced temperature
how do anti-inflammatory drugs reduce pain
stops pain receptors sending signals to brain
what can anti-inflammatory drugs cause (4)
- heat burn
- nausea
- headaches
- diarrhoea
what is physiotherapy
physical treatment of injuries
methods of physiotherapy (4)
- mobilisation
- massage
- exercises
- posture training
what is surgery treatment
procedure to repair soft tissue (e.g. Achilles tendon) or hard tissue (e.g. broken clavicle) to reposition or realign the bones/soft tissue
why is arthroscopy used (keyhole surgery) (4)
- minimises tissue damage
- less invasive
- decreased risk infection
- recovery = quicker
