research methods- content analysis and coding Flashcards
what is content analysis?
-type of observational research
-people studied indirectly via the communications they have produced
what types of communication may be included in a content analysis?
-spoken interaction (e.g. speech, conversation)
-written forms (e.g. texts, email)
-examples from the media (e.g. books, magazines, TV)
why is coding useful in content analysis?
-first stage of CA
-some data sets extremely large (e.g. transcripts of several dozen lengthy interviews)
-info needs to be categorised into meaningful units
what data is coding most associated with?
quantitive
how may data be organised into categorised?
-counting no. of times particular word or phrase appears in text to produce quantitative data
what is thematic analysis?
similar to content analysis but is more qualitative and aims to produce themes rather than e.g. word counts
