biopsychology- endocrine system Flashcards
what is the endocrine system?
-communication system that instructs glands to release hormones directly into the bloodstream
-these hormones are carried in the blood towards target organs in the body
speed of the endocrine system compared to the NS?
acts much more slowly
what is a hormone?
chemical substance that circulates in the blood stream and affects target organs
what does the hypothalamus do?
-control system that regulates the endocrine system
-brain region connected to the pituitary gland
-stimulates and controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
what’s released from the adrenal medulla and what impact does it have?
(inside)
-adrenaline and noradrenaline
-key role in fight or flight
what’s released from the adrenal cortex and what impact does it have?
(outside)
-cortisol
-triggers release of glucose to provide the body with energy and suppressing the immune system
what’s released from the testes and what impact does it have?
-testosterone
-responsible for male sex characteristics during puberty and muscle growth
what’s released from the ovaries and what impact does it have?
-estrogen
-regulates female reproductive system (menstrual and pregnancy)
what’s released from the pineal gland and what impact does it have?
-melatonin
-biological rhythms (sleep/wake cycle)
what’s released from the thyroid gland and what impact does it have?
-thyroxine
-regulates metabolism
what’s released from the hypothalamus and what impact does it have?
-stimulates and controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
