Renal 1 Urinary Sytem 1 Flashcards
Urinary system structure
Kidney
Ureter
Bladder
Urethra
Kidney
Principal organ of the urinary system
Ureter
Tubes that carry urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder
Bladder
Stretchable organ that acts as a reservior
Urethra
Small tube from the bladder neck to the external meatus
Kidney 1
2 bean shaped kidneys that lie in the abdominal wall, one on each side of the vertebral column behind peritoneum and below the diagphram
Function of the kidney
Regulate volume and composition of extra cellular fluid
Maintain acid base balance
Control blood pressure and produce renin
Produce erythropoietin
Excrete waste products and foreign compounds
Conversion of vitamin d
Nephron
Functional unit of the kidney, each kidney contains approximately 1million nephrons
Parts of the nephron
Glomerulus Proximal tubule Loop of henle Distal tubule Collecting duc
Glomerulus
Responsible for blood filtration to form urine ( tiny ball shaped structure composed of capillary blood vessels)
Proximal tubule
Begins with renal pole to the loop of henle. Reabsorbed filtered glucose
Loop of henle
Recover water and sodium chloride from urine ( long u-shaped portion of tubule conducts urine km each nephron
Distal tubule
Reabsorbes calcium, sodium, chloride, and regulates the ph of urine by secreting protons and absorbing bicarbonate
Collecting duct
Twisting tube that collects urine from nephron and moves it into renal pelvis and ureter
Urine formation
Glomerular filtration
Tubular reabsorption
Tubucular secretions
Glomerular formation
Water and solutes smaller than protien are forced through the capillary walls and pores of the glomerular capsule into the renal tubule
Tubular reabsorption
Water, glucose, amino acids and needed ions are transported out to filtrate into the tubule cells and then enter the capillary blood.
Tubular secretion
H, k , createnine na d drugs are removed from the peritubular
Ureter
Tubes that carry urine from renal pelvis to the bladder
Hollow muscular tubes 25-30 cm long
There are where renal pelvis joins the ureter is called pelvouretic junction and the ureter inserts into either side of the bladder at the base vesicoureteric junction
Bladder
Reservoir of urine
Lies in the pelvic cavity and the size and position depending on the volume of urine it contains
Open into the urethra at the lowest point
On average 200-250 ml urine causes distension and the urge to urinate
Urethra
Small tube that incorporates the smooth muscle of the bladder neck and extending the striated muscle of the external meautus
Urethra primary function
Control voiding
Serve as a conduit for urine from the bladder to the outside of the body during the voiding
Femal urethra size
2.5 - 5 cm
Male urethra
20-25 cm ( associated with the urinary and reproductive system)
