Observe and document

• Observe for signs of infection and inflammation • Check dressing is clean, dry and intact

Inspect the drainage
unit and tubing
A
• NEVER lift the drain above check level • Ensure no kinks or obstructions that may inhibit drainage • Ensure all connections are tight and secure • Tubing should be anchored to the patients skin to prevent pulling • Ensure the unit is securely positioned in a stand or hanging on the bed

Low-pressure suction
A
Low suction is not always required. If ordered set to prescribed level • Monitor an document low pressure suction

Drainage
A
• Monitor and document the colour and consistency of the drainage • Monitor and document the volume of the drainage • Monitor and document the oscillation and check for presence of bubbling

Patient transport
A
• Do NOT clamp the tube • Ensure the bottle is always carried below the level of the patient and observe for safety
