What is a successful region?
area with high rates of employment, inward migration, investment in infrastructure and low levels of deprivation

How is Sydney a successful region?
highly multi-cultural city- 30% pop are migrants
high number of quaternary sector jobs
3rd Global city- terms of connectivity and economic output
in 2 different time zones making trading easy with USA + Europe
high average salary- cost of living higher
young economically active pop
climate favourable to work in
What are the disadvantage of Sydney being a successful region?
very effected by climate change
lack of public transport
risk of wild fires
high living costs
What is a region in decline?
area with high levels of deprivation, dereliction and spiral of decline
What is an example of a region of decline?
Rust Belt, North-East of the USA
What is the Rust Belt?
once one of the largest producer and exporter of metals and coals
What happened to make the Rust Belt a region of decline?
largely deindustrialised due to global shift to china
survive only due to gov subsidies
high paid primary + secondary jobs replaced by low wage tertiary/service jobs
outward migration = brain drainage
high crime rates
high rates of unemployment
large number of people claiming benefits
What is a negative multiplier?
downward spiral/cycle where economic conditions produce less spending leading to less investment causing continual decline of things
What is a sink estate?
council housing estates that are least desirable to live in, shortest waiting list for housing
tend to have lowest income, most in need residents, high deprivation and crime
Eg Lower Falinge
What is a gated community?
Wealthy residential areas that are fenced off + have security gates and entry systems
usually found near sink estates
What is declining rural settlements?
rural villages suffering pop decline + service deprivation
not much income, generally older people living their so less abled workers
What is a commuter village?
places where people live to travel to work as it is cheaper
Eg hebden
How can we measure levels of engagement?
Voting turnouts- more votes = more involved
Community involvement- how many people help with projects
What does having a lived experience mean?
Person’s first hand experience of a particular place, their thoughts, feelings, opinions and attitudes to where they lived
