Reflexes Flashcards
3 types of neurone
Motor neurone, sensory “, relay “
Reflexes
Involuntary and almost immediate reaction to a stimulus
Motor neurone
Transmits impulses from the CNS to the effectors
Sensory neurone
Transmits impulses from receptors/sense organs to the CNS
Relay neurone
Within the CNS, transmits impulses from neurone to neurone
Cell body
Part of a neurone which contains the nucleus
Dendrites
Extensions which receive nerve impulses from other cells; the nerve impulses are then transmitted towards the cell body
Axon
Carries nerve impulses to an effector organ
Myelin sheath
Fatty sheath which insulates the axon(preventing shirt circuits of electrical impulses) and speeds up the conduction of nerve impulses
Reflex arc
The pathway through the nervous system that a reflex takes
Describe the spinal cord
- long, thin, tubular bundle of nerves
- extension of CNS from the brain
- enclosed by the vertebral column
Dorsal root ganglion
Nodule on dorsal root containing cell bodies
