Glossary Flashcards
Base
Chemical compounds made of nitrogen and other elements which make up the genetic code
Amino acids
What proteins are made up of
Chromosomes
Thread like structures in the nucleus made up of DNA
Chromatid
One of two identical chromosomal strands in a duplicated chromosome
Centromere
Holds chromatids together in a duplicated chromosome
Characteristics
Affected by proteins eg eye colour, hair colour, IQ, weight, height etc
Clones
Genetically identical cells or organisms
DNA
A large molecule that makes up chromosomes and contains genetic information (genes)
Stands for deoxyribonucleic acid
Double helix
The structure of DNA; like a twisted ladder
Diploid cells
Cells with chromosomes in pairs
Endocrine system
System of glands that produce hormones
Endometrium
Uterus lining, thick tissue with lots of blood vessels , provides nutrients and oxygen for implanted embryo
Fertilisation
Fusion of male and female gametes
Gene
A sequence/section of DNA, responsible for characteristics
Genetic code
The rules by which the information encoded in the DNA sequence is translated into the amino acid sequence
