Evolution Flashcards
Inheritance of acquired characteristics
Characteristics of individuals change during their own lifetime The changed (acquired) characteristics are passed on to the next generation
Micropropagation (tissue culture)
A way in which very small pieces of plants can be grown to produce commercial quantities of identical plants (clones) with desirable characteristics
Evidence for Lamarck
Changes in individuals can be acquired over time
Evidence against Lamarck
These acquired characteristics are not passed on
Natural selection
The mechanism of evolution
How does natural selection work? 3 step plan
1) the environment ‘selects’ from already existing variations the ones that are best suited for a particular environment
2) these survive and breed & pass on their genes
3) more offspring with these characteristics are produced
Where does the variation come from?
Mutations in genes
Observed micro evolution
Small scale changes within species leading to new subspecies
Fossils
Mineralised or otherwise preserved remains of animals, plants and other organisms
Most common way for fossils to be formed
Harder parts of animal/plant are replaced by minerals over a long period of time
Extinction
The permanent loss of all the members of a species from the earth
Mass extinction
Loss of a number of species at the same time
The theory of evolution
All the species which are alive today -and many more which are now extinct-
Evolved from simple life forms, which first developed more than 3 billion years ago
Darwin’s theory
Evolution takes place through natural selection
