Radioactivity Flashcards
1
Q
What is radioactivity?
A
- Some isotopes have unstable nucleuses.
- To become stable the neuclues gives out radiation.
- Radioactive decay.
- Total random process.
2
Q
What is the activity?
A
- rate at which a source of unstable nuclei decay.
Activity is measured in Bq. - 1 Bq is 1 decay per second.
3
Q
How do we measure the activity of a radioactive source?
A
- geiger-,Muller tube.
- ## The count rate: Number of decays recorded each second by a detector.
4
Q
What are alpha particles?
A
- Consists of 2 neutrons and 2 protons.
- ## Same as the nucleus of a helium atom.
5
Q
What is a beta particle?
A
- A beta particle is an electron which is ejected from the nucleus at very high speed.
- Formed inside the nucleus when a nuetron changes into a proton and electron.
6
Q
What is a gamma ray?
A
- Type of electromagnetic radiation from the nucleus.
-
7
Q
What are the 4 types of radiation?
A
- Gama Ray.
- Beta.
- Alpha.
- Neutrons.
8
