Mains electricity Flashcards
1
Q
How are electrical appliances connected to the main supply?
A
- Using 3 core cables.
- Wires= Made from copper (good conduction of electricity).
- ## Cotains= Made from plastic (does not conduct electricity).
2
Q
What does the brown wire do?
A
- Live wire.
- Carries the Alternating potential difference from the supply.
- around 230 volts.
3
Q
What is the live wire?
A
- Connected to a fuse in a plug.
- Dangerous and fatal if touched.
- If someone touched a live wire;
- Current flows through the person into the earth and they’d be electrocuted.
4
Q
What is the blue wire?
A
- Nuetral wire.
- Completes the circuit.
- Potential Difference= 0 Volts.
compared to live wire.
5
Q
What is the green and yellow striped wire?
A
- Earth wire.
- Safety precaution to stop the wire from becoming live.
- Huge current flows to the earth wire and the fuse melts and shuts off the curent.
