National Grid Flashcards
1
Q
What does the national grid consist of?
A
- System of transformers.
- High-voltaged cables.
- ## Energy is always lost in the power cables due to the resistance of the wires.
2
Q
How can reduce the energy which is lost?
A
- Building power stations near homes to reduce the distance between the national grid and homes or transformers.
3
Q
What do step-up transformers do?
A
- Electricity passes through the step-up transformers:
- Increases potential difference to several hundred thousands of volts.
- Less energy is lost in power cables when potential difference is high.
4
Q
What do step down transformers do?
A
- Reduce the potential difference to around 230 V.
