Hydro Electricity and Tidal Barrage Flashcards
1
Q
How do hydroelectric damns work?
A
- Big dam that prevents water from flowing like it should.
- ## Higher water level on one side.
2
Q
How is electricity generated?
A
- By the difference in water levels.
- Difference in height= stored water has a huge amount of GPE energy.
- ## Can be converted into electricity.
3
Q
How does tidal barrages work?
A
- The force of the water being released in the reservoir spins the blades of the turbines.
- Connected to generators= and generate electricity.
- After passing through the turbines the water flows back into the river.
4
Q
Pros?
A
- Generate large amounts of energy + no pollution.
- Reliable sources of electricity.
- Hydroelectric Dams: Immediate response to increased demand.
- Running costs are fairly low.
- ## Work on both large and low scales.
5
Q
Cons?
A
- Often have a big impact on their surrounding enviroment.
Hydroelectric dams: Often flood huge areas.
results in submerging habitans and villages. - Stops boats and fishes from travelling.
- Initial set up is expensive.
