Q

What is internal energy?

A
  • Energy stored in a system by the particles.
  • includes kinetic energy (due to the movement of the particles).
  • Potential energy (Due to the forces between the particles and bonds between atoms in a molecule).

Q

What does the temperature to time graph look like of a solid to liquid?

A
  • Temperature of solid rises as we increase the energy of the particles.
  • At some point: Temperature stops rising and line becomes horizontal. Solid is changing into a liquid. (Melting).
  • Energy we are putting in weakens or breaks the forces of attraction between the particles.

Temperature does not increase as:

  • Increasing internal energy store of thr system.
  • Not changing temperarture.

Q

What does the graph look like from liquid to gas?

A
  • All the solid has melted into a liquid.
  • Temperature rises again.
  • Increasing energy of particles.
  • At some point: Temperature stops and becomes horizontal.
  • Substance is boiling and energy we are putting in breaks forces of attractions.
  • Once all liquid has boiled the temperature rises again
