First property: Range in air.

A

Alpha particles= Large, Travel around 5cm in the air before colliding with air particles and stop.
Beta Particles= Travel further + reach 15cm in the air before stopping.
Gamma Rays: Travels several meters in the air before stopping.

  • Alpha particles; Stopped by a single sheet of paper.
  • Beta Particles: Stopped by a few mm of alliminium.
  • Gamma Rays: Stopped by several cm of lead.

A
  • When radiation collides with atoms, that can cause the atom to loose electrons and form ions.
  • Alpha Particles: Very strong ionising,
  • Beta Particles: Quite Strongly ionsing.
  • Gamma Rays: Weakly ionising.
