Energy Sources: GeoThermal Flashcards
1
Q
What is geothermal energy?
A
- Thermal energy generated and stored in the Earths crust.
- Use for either generating heat or generate electricty.
- ## Heat being less expensive.
2
Q
How is geothermal energy generated directly from heat?
A
- Pumping water down intot he ground/
- Allowing it to warm up and pumping it back up to the surface to heat our homes.
3
Q
How do we generate electricity?
A
- Leave the water underground until it heats so much that it converts into steam.
- As the steam rises, Gas turns turbines which drive the generators to produce electricity.
4
Q
Cons of Geothermal energy:
A
- Only use this in certain areas.
E.g: Volcanic areas. - ## Power plants are expensive to build.
5
Q
Pros:
A
- (Where it is avaiable).
- Can be a great source of power.
- Installing the plants can damage the environment only slightly.
- Running it does not produce any pollutants.
- Renewable.
- Reliable over long periods.
