Internal Energy Flashcards
1
Q
What is internal energy?
A
- Energy stored in a system by the particles.
- Total kinetic energy and potential energy of all the particles that make up the system.
2
Q
What happens when we heat a solid?
A
- Increase the internal energy to a point where it can turn into a liquid.
3
Q
What happens when we heat a liquid?
A
- Increase internal energy.
- At some point the liquid will turn into gas.
Boiling,
4
Q
What happens if we cool down the gas?
A
- Reduce internal energy.
- At some point, gas turns back into a liquid.
- Condensation.
5
Q
What happens if we cool down the liquid?
A
- reduce the internal energy even more.
- Liquid at some point turns into a solid.
Freezes.
6
Q
What is the process by which a solid can turn directly into a gas?
A
- Sublimation.
-
7
Q
During change of states what happens to mass?
A
- Always conserved.
- ## Not adding nor taking away any particles.
8
Q
What changes are state changes?
A
- Physical not chemicals.
- Reverse the change, the material recovers it’s original properties.
9
Q
What happens in evaporation?
A
- Liquid turns into gas but only surface of the liquid.
- ## Only particles in surface; have enough energy to turn into a gas.
