RA Flashcards

1
Q

3 classes of drug for RA?

A

-NSAIDS
Rapid relief of sxs; don’t prevent joint damage
-higher doses

-Glucocorticoids
Rapid relief of sxs; slow progression
Long term use = toxicity –>therefore short courses

-DMARDs
Reduce joint destruction
More toxic than NSAIDS
Biologic and non-biologic

Q

How do biologic DMARDS work?

A

target the specific parts of the inflammatory process

examples:
- Tumor Necrosis Factor
- Promotes destruction of B cells
- Inhibits activation of T cells

16
Q

etanercept works with what part of immune system?

A

Tumor Necrosis Factor Antagonists –> biological DMARD

blocks tumor necrosis alpha to decrease inflamm. response

17
Q

Route for etanercept

A

SQ twice a week

18
Q

side effects of etanercept

A
  • injection site reactions

- Risk of heart failure, cancer, CNS disorders and rarely serious skin reactions

19
Q

special considerations for etanercept (4)

A
  1. Test for TB before tx –> treat for TB before start treatment w/ drug
  2. Watch for Hep B reactivation
  3. No active infection = stop therapy
  4. No live vaccines
