Restraints, what is it?
Measure used to restrict movement or control the behaviour of a client. Can be physical, chemical and environmental

Restraints use risks
Increased injury, skin breakdown, confusion, agitation, loss of dignity, loss of will to live, loss if bone mass and muscle atrophy, incontinence and constipation, loss of appetite and dehydration
When can restraints be used?
Protection - ex: when clients may cause serious harm to themselves or others
Maintaining treatment - ex: to prevent removal of a breathing tube
Enhance freedom or enjoyment of life - ex: locked unit or garden in LTC facility
Alternatives use of restraints
Falls, sliding & unsteadiness - medication review, lower bed, routine positioning, clutter free room, mattress on floor
Cognitive impairment, acute confusion & wandering - alarm devices, soothing music, relaxation techniques
Pulling out invasive tubes, aggression & agitation - gentle touch, soothing music, redirection with simple ands
Nursing responsibilities
- Assess behaviour and use alternatives, Ensure consent is obtained, Collaborate, Individualized plan of care, least restrictive restraint, consult agency policy, evaluation, reassess and reevaluate, document
Client abuse
Misuse of power, betrayal of trust, respect or intimacy in the therapeutic relationship (physical, verbal, neglect, financial, sexual, emotional)
Safety: expected outcomes

- client who is knowledgeable about safety factors and precautions
