Health Models Flashcards
What is a health model?
A design for delivering health care
List all 5 models
Medical, holistic, indigenous wholistic theory for health, wellness, population health promotion
Medical Model
Focuses on diagnosis and treatment rather than prevention.
Ex: doctor prescribing antibiotics to treat infection
Holistic model
Views health as a balance of physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well being
Ex: a patient seeks treatment for chronic back pain. In addition, healthcare provider may inquire about patients stress levels, emotional well being, lifestyle etc and include massages, stress management techniques, or acupuncture in their treatment
Wellness model
Actively pursuing behaviours that promote overall health and quality of life
Ex: wellness coach may work with client to improve overall health by setting goals (could be sleep hygiene, self care, etc)
Population health promotion model
Focuses on preventing and promoting illness. Addresses social determinants and promotes healthy behaviour
Ex: government implementation smoke free policies in public places
Indigenous Wholistic Theory
Belief in interconnectedness of all aspects of life
Ex: someone seeking healing for persistent headache. After addressing physical symptoms, person will go through ceremonies to restore balance and harmony within the person, community, and natural environment
