Powerlessness
There is no solution but has no control/power to act on it
Hopelessness
No solution to the situation
Occurs when powerlessness is not addressed
Powerlessness (nursing diagnosis). How does it make client feel?
Angry, depressed, anxious, uneasy, passive, dependent on others, negative self image and low self esteem
Usually due to lack of control and can result from professionals who discount patient expertise

- Inability to communicate
- inability to perform ADL’s
Situational
- hospital or institutional limitations
- chronic or sudden illness
- financial
Maturational
- older adult (retirement, sensory, and motor deficits)
