Emphasizes importance of all aspects of one’s health (physical, environmental, mental, social). Goal is to address root cause and support body’s natural healing
Ex: acupuncture, herbal remedies, mindfulness practices

1980s - complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)

Complementary approaches
Used in addition to conventional treatment
Ex: aromatherapy, art, music, dance
Alternative approaches
Used to replace allopathic (conventional) medical care
Ex: special diet to treat cancer instead of surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy that has been recommended by a conventional physician

- Perception that medical treatments do not provide relief/treatment/cure
