Coercion
Forced compliance based on fear. Uses threats, punishment or intimidation, often exerting control over others actions against their will
Ex: nurse tells patient they need to take meds or else they won’t be able to leave hospital
Persuasion
Influence others by presenting compelling arguments, reasoning or emotional appeals, aiming to change attitudes or beliefs
Ex: nurses encourages patient to undergo surgery they’re hesitant about by listing risks and benefits
Reward
Leverage to motivate someone a desired behaviour or action
Ex: nurse praises and rewards a patient for consistently adhering to rehabilitation exercises
Positional
Based off of formal position within organizational hierarchy enabling them to make decisions, allocate resources and enforce rules or policies
Ex: nurse
Personal
Stemming from one’s personal qualities (charm, trustworthiness) allowing them time to influence others
Ex: nurse builds relationship with patient. Patient then trusts nurse cooperates with treatment plan
