Quadriceps femoris, patellar stability, adductor canal (dave's notes) Flashcards
What is the origin and insertion of rectus femoris?
Origin: Straight head from anterior inferior iliac spine, reflected head from ilium above acetabulum.
Insertion: Quadricepts tendon to patella
What is the origin and insertion of vastus lateralis?
Origin: Upper trochanteric line, base of the trochanter, lateral linea aspera, lateral supracondylar ridge and LIMS
Insertion: Lateral quadriceps tendon to patella
What is the origin and insertion of vastus intermedius?
Origin: Anterior and lateral shaft of femur to a nad bredth above teh condyles
Insertion: same as vastus lateralis
What is the origin and insertion of vastus medialis?
Origin: Lower intertrochanteric line, spiral line, medial linea aspera and MIMS
Insertion: Medial side of quadriceps tendon to patella
What is the action and innervation of vastus lateralis?
Extends the knee
Nerve is the deep branch of the femoral nerve, being the posterior division of the anterior rami
What is the action and innervation of rectus femoris?
Extends teh leg at the knee and flexes the thigh at the hip
Innervation: Deep branch of the femoral nerve being the posterior division of the anterior rami
What is the action and innervation of vastus intermedius and vastus medialis?
Extends the knee
Innervation is the deep branch of the femoral nerve being the posterior division of the anterior rami
Describe the quadriceps tendon
Trilaminar, lateralis lies between vastus intermedius and rectus femoris
What are the attachments of the patellar ligament?
Connects teh lower border of the patella with the smooth convexity of the tibial tuberosity.
What are the patellar retinacula?
Fibrous expansions which connect the sides of the patella with the lower margins of the condyles of the tibia
What direction does quadriceps femoris pull the patella in? How is this compensated for? (list 3 factors)
QF tends to pull the patella laterally. This is compensated for by
-Forward prominence of the lateral condyle -> bony factor
- Medial patellar retinaculum -> ligamentous factor
- Insertion of VM -> muscular factor
Where is the adductor canal?
A gutter shaped groove between vastus medialis and the front of the adductor muscles. Roofed by fascia.
What is the content of the adductor canal?
The femoral artery, vein, and sapenous nerve.
What lies on the fascial roof of the adductor canal?
Sartorius
How do the femoral vessels leave the adductor canal?
By passing into the popliteal fossa between hamstring and adductor parts of adductor magnus muscle.
