Anterior compartment of the thigh - Superficial fascia, fascia lata (dave's notes) Flashcards
What is the superficial fascia of the anterior thigh? What is found below this?
Scarpas fascia extends below the inguinal ligament and fixes to the fascia lata. The saphenous opening is found below this line.
What is the iliotibial tract? where does it insert?
A thickening of the fascia passing vertically downwards to be inserted on the anterior surface of the lateral condyle of the femur.
What is the function of the iliotibial tract? What is it attached to along its length?
Helps to stabilise the knee in the hyperextended position. This tract is attached to the lateral intermuscular septum.
What is the clinical significance of the relations of scarpas fascia to the saphenous opening?
A femoral hernia will never lie below scarpas fascia, and never becomes very large.
Where does the tensor fascia lata arise? Where does it insert?
Arises from the external lip of the iliac crest, ASIS and tubercle, passes down and becomes thicker as it inserts in to the iliotibial tract.
What is found at the anterior border of the tensor fascia lata?
The anterior border lids edge to edge with sartorius at the ASIS.
What is the nerve supply to tensor fascia lata?
The superior gluteal nerve.
What is the action of tensor fascia lata?
Pulls upon the iliotibial tract and tis aids in knee extension and stabilisation.
