Muscles of the gluteal region (dave's notes) Flashcards
What is the origin and insertion of gluteus maximus?
Origin: Outer surface of the ilium behind the posterior gluteal line and posterior third of the iliac crest, lumbar fascia, lateral mass of the sacrum, ST ligament and coccyx
Insertion: Deepest 1/4 into the gluteal tuberosity of the femur. Remaining 3.4 into the iliotibial tract.
What is the origin and insertion of gluteus medius?
Origin: Outer upper surface of the ilium between posterior and middle gluteal lines
Insertion: Posteriolateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur.
List the muscles of the gluteal region
Gluteus maximus
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimus
Piriformis
What is the origin and insertion of gluteus minimis?
Outer surface of the ilium between posterior and anterior gluteal lines
What is the origin and insertion of piriformis?
Origin: Arises from 2,3,4 costotransverse bars of the anterior sacrum between sacral foramina
What is the action and innervation of gluteus maximus?
Action: Extends and laterally orates the hip
Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve
What is the action and innervation of gluteus medius?
Action: Abducts and medially rotates the hip. Tilts pelvis on walking.
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve above piriformis.
What is notable about gluteus maximus?
This is the largest muscle in the body
What is the action and innervation of gluteus minimus?
Action: Abducts and medially rotates the hip. Tilts pelvis on walking.
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve.
What is the action and innervation of piriformis?
Action: Laterally rotates and stabilises the hip
Innervation: Anterior primary rami of S1,2
What is notable about the position of piriformis?
Passes through the greater sciatic foramen??
