Lateral compartment of the leg (dave's notes) Flashcards
What are the muscles of the lateral compartment of the leg?
Peroneus longus
Peroneus brevis
What is the origin and insertion of peroneus longus?
Origin: Upper 2/3 of hte lateral shaft of the fibula, head of the fibula, and superficial tibiofibular joint
Insertion: Plantar aspect of the base of the first metatarsal, medial cuneiform passing deep to teh longitudinal plantar ligament
What is the origin and insertion of peroneus brevis?
Origin: lower 2/3rds of the lateral shaft of the fibula
Insertion: Tuberosity of base of the 5th metatarsal
What is the action and innervation of peroneus longus?
Plantarflexes and everts the foot. Supports lateral longitudinal and transverse arches
Innervation is the superficial peroneal nerve.
What is the action and innervation of peroneus brevis?
Plantar flexes and everts the foot. Supports the lateral lonitudinal arch.
Innervation is the superficial peroneal nerve.
What lies anterior to the tendon of peroneus brevis?
The broad tendon of peroneus brevis lies behind the lateral malleolus.
What lies anterior to the tendon of peroneus longus?
The narrow tendon of peroneus longus lies on the tendon of peroneus brevis and does not come into contact with the malleolus.
What anatomical landmark are both the peroneii tendons associated with, after the lateral malleolus. How?
Both pass forward to the perondal trocular, brevis above, longus below. Brevis passes to teh tip of the tubercle. Longus grooves the cuboid bone, posses a sesamoid fibrocartilage and then crosses the sole obliquely to be inserted into the base of the first metatarsal.
What binds the tendons of the peroneus longus and brevis to the lateral malleolus?
The superior peroneal retinaculum. Both are enclosed in a common synovial sheath.
What begins in the substance of peroneus longus?
The superficial peroneal nerve.
