What is the cutaneous supply over the tibia derived from?
From the femoral nerves
What is the cutaneous supply over the extensor compartment derived from?
From the common peroneal nerve
Describe the saphenous nerve - where does it branch and descend? Where does it terminate?
This gives of an infrapatellar branch, then descends just behind the vein, bifurcating 5-7cm above the medial malleolus.
The main nerve (anterior branch) ends on the medial side of the foot (MTP joint area).
What does the lateral cutaneous nerve of the skin supply?
A branch of the common peroneal, the lateral cutaneous nerve supplies skin and deep fascia per the upper parts of the extensor and peroneal compartments.
What attaches to the anterior surface of the tibia?
The subcutaneous surface of the tibia has fat attached directly to the periosteum (deep fascia blends with periosteum)
What is found in the pretibial fat?
The saphenous nerve and vein. This is where emost of the deep connections lie; just below, just above, and 10cm above the medial malleolus and in the middle of the leg et al in the lower thigh. Most of the blood is directed to the deep veins where it is then pumped by muscle action.
What does the upper end of the shaft to he tibia receive?
The tendons of sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus (common attachment) whiz are separated by a bursa which if inflamed can give a resemblance to a goose foot.
Where does the patellar ligament insert?
Into a smooth area lying obliquely on the tibial tuberosity (epiphysis of upper tibia)
Where is the patellar retinaculum found?
Tis is a fibrous expansion inserted into both sides of the patella
What is found in front of the patella?
The pre-patellar bursa
What is found in front of the patellar ligament? What is between the patellar ligament and tibia?
The superficial infra patellar bursa lies in front of ht patellar ligament and the deep lies between the ligament and tibia.
What does the deep fascia of the anterior compartment cover? What are its attachments?
Only muscles, as it otherwise blends with periosteum. It encloses the muscles of the leg and is attached to the anterior and posterior borders of the tibia, and above the ankle to the lateral malleolus
What lies between the anterior intermuscular septum and the tibia?
The extensor compartment
What lies between the posterior intermuscular septum and the tibia?
The bulky flexor compartment
