Pulmonary Flashcards
Signs and symptoms include: swelling, pain, redness and warmth of affected leg
DVT
aka pulmonary heart disease, refers to hypertrophy of the right ventricle caused by altered structure or function of the lungs
Cor Pulmonale
Arterial hypertension is a sustained elevation of systolic pressure >= ____ or diastolic pressure >= ___
140
90
Classification of hypertension in adults: normal prehypertensive stage 1 hypertension stage 2 hypertension
< 120
120-139
140-159
>= 160 SBP; or >= 100 mmHG DBP
signs and symptoms include: fatigue, aching, numbness, or pain primarily in the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot at rest or when walking; poorly healing wounds of the legs or feet; distal hair loss, trophic skin changes and hypertrophic nails
Peripheral Arterial Disease
Pts have an increased TLC with a significant increase in residual volume
COPD
Fluid collects in the aveoli - left ventrical is unable to pump blood adequately - pressure increases inside the left atrium and then in the pulmonary veins and capillaries, causing fluid to be pushed through the capillary walls into the alveoli - feeling of suffocating or drowning, sob, irregular pulse, frothy, blood-tinged sputum
Pulmonary Edema
complete or partial collapse of a lung or lobe of a lung - develops when th tiny air sacs within the lung become deflated.
Atelectasis
used to visualize the location, size, and shape of the heart, lungs, blood vessels, ribs, and bones of the spine. Can also reveal fluid in the lungs or pleural space, pneumonia, emphysema, cancer, and other conditions
Chest Radiograph
This is marked by dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain that is aggravated by deep breathing, mild fever, and decreased or absent breath sounds over the effusion. Fluid accumulates in the space between the layers of pleura.
Pleural Effusion - abnormal amount of fluid around the lungs -
This is marked by bronchial - crackling, bubbling, and rumbling sounds when inhale - breath sounds, and pleuritic chest pain is usually not aggravated by deep breathing.
Pneumonia
This is marked by bibasilar or diffuse crackles rather than absence of breath sounds.
Pulmonary edema - excess fluid in lungs
The volume of air expired during a forced maximal expiration after a forced maximal inspiration.
FVC Forced Vital Capacity
A pt with cor pulmonale will likely exhibit what response to exercise?
Increased HR decreased BP - pts who have cor pulmonale exhibit right sided heart failure as a result of pulmonary hypertension. These pts tend to present w a decrease in cardiac output (although heart rate increases, stroke volume and systolic blood pressure decrease) during ex,resulting in pallor, sweating, hypotension and rapid pulse of small amplitude..
