Puberty Ans Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
What are the main reproductive hormones in men and women that are released at puberty
Men = testosterone > produced by the testes and stimulates speed production Women = oestrogen > produces by ovaries
What happens in the first 2 stages of the menstrual cycle
Day 1 - lining of uterus breaks down for about 4 days
Stage 2 - from day 4-14 the uterus lining builds up again
What happens in stages 3 and 4 of the menstural cycle
Stage 3- at day 14 an egg develops and is released from the ovary = ovulation
Stage 4 - the lining of the uterus is maintained until the 28th day and if no egg is fertilised the lining will break down
What are the 4 hormones in the menstrual cycle
FSH
oestrogen
LH
progesterone
What does the fsh hormone do
Causes an egg to mature in an ovary in a follicle and stimulates the overuse to produce oestrogen
What does oestrogen do
Causes the lining of the uterus to grow
It stimulates the release of LH and inhibits release of FSH
What does the LH hormone do
Stimulates the release of an egg at day 14
What does progesterone do
Maintains the lining of the uterus during the 2nd half of the cycle
When these levels fall the lining breaks down
What hormones can reduce fertility
Oestrogen used to prevent the release of an egg and progesterone stimulate the production of thick mucus which prevents any speed getting to the egg
What is in the pill
And what’s its side effects
Oestrogen and progesterone
Can cause headaches and nausea and doesn’t protect again stds
What other forms of contraception contain hormones
The contraceptive patch
Contraceptive implant
Contraceptive injection
Intrauterine device
What hormones can increase fertility chances
FSH AND LH
What is IVF
When a women can’t get pregnant their eggs are collected in a lab and fertilising them using the mans sperm
The egg is then grown into an embryo and then transferred to the women’s uterus
What has improved the ivf treatments
Advances in technology like microscope techniques
What is sterilisation
Cutting or tying of the Fallopian tubes which is a permanent procedure to avoiding pregnancy
