Controlling Body Temperature Flashcards
What is the thermoregulatory system and where is it
In the brain which contains receptors that are sensitive to the temperature of the blood flowing through the brain
It also receives impulses from the temp receptors in the skin
How is body temperature controlled
By negative feedback
How does the thermoregulatory system work in negative feedback
It acts as a coordination centre and receives info from the temp receptors and then triggers the effectors automatically
How can effectors work antagonistically
One effector heats try the other cooks working at the same time to achieve precise temperature
What happens to your effectors when your too hot
Hairs lie flat
Sweat glands produce sweat
Blood supply to surface of skin
What is vasodilation
The blood vessels supplying the skin dilate so more blood flows close to the surface
What happens to your effectors when your too cold
Hair stand up to trap an insulating layer of air
No sweat produced
Blood supply shuts off
Muscles contract automatically
What is vasoconstriction
Blood vessels supplying skin capillaries construct to close off the skins blood supply
