Controlling Blood Glucose Flashcards
What control blood glucose levels
Insulin and glucagon
What foods put glucose into the blood
Carbohydrates
What removed glucose from the blood
Normal metabolism of cells
Vigorous exercise
What can glucose be stored as and where can excess glucose be stored
Glycogen in the liver and muscles
What are the changes in the levels of glucose in the blood monitored and controlled by
And by using what hormones
By the pancreas
Using insulin and glucagon hormones
In negative feedback
What is added if the blood glucose level is too high
Insulin is added by the pancreas
(Its secreted) and so the insulin removes glucose from then blood
What is added if blood glucose levels are too low
Glucagon is added by pancreas (its secreted) which makes glucose release into the blood by liver
What is diabetes
A condition that affects your ability to control your blood sugar level
What is type 1 diabetes
The pancreas produces little or no insulin
The blood sugar level can rise to a level that could kill them
What is type 2 diabetes
A person becomes resistant to their own insulin so their body cells do respond properly to the hormone
The blood sugar level could rise to a dangerous level
How do you treat people with type 1 diabetes
With insulin therapy
You inject insulin throughout the day mostly at mealtimes
So the glucose is removed from the blood quickly once the food is digested and stops the levels getting to high
What cautions must people with type 1 diabetes take
Limiting the intake of food rich in simple carbohydrates like sugars
And exercising regularly which removes excess glucose
What increases your chance of developing type 2 diabetes
Being overweight
How do you control type 2 diabetes
Carbohydrate-controlled diet
Regular exercise
