Meiosis Flashcards
What does meiosis produce
Gametes which only have half the original number of chromosomes
Why do gametes only have 1 copy of each chromosome
When gamete fusion takes place you have the right amount of chromosomes again
What happens in the first division of meiosis
Genetic info is duplicated to from 2 armed chromosomes and the chromosomes arrange themselves into pairs and like up in the centre
The pairs are then pulled apart and 2 new cells are made which both have one copy of each chromosome some father and mother
What happens in the second division of meiosis
The chromosomes line up again in the centre of the cell and the arms of the chromosomes are pulled apart
So you get 4 gametes each with a single set of chromosomes
What happens to the cell that forms once the two gametes have fused together in fertilisation
The cell will divide by mitosis to produce lots of new cells in the embryo
These cells will start to differentiate to make up a whole organism
Advantages of asexual reproduction
Variation is produced in offspring this increases the chance of species surviving a change in environment and have a advantageous characteristic - natural selection
Selective breeding
Asexual reproduction advantages
Only 1 parent
Asexual uses less energy than sexual
It’s faster
Clones can be produced
What organisms can reproduce asexually and sexually
Malarial parasites
Fungi
Plants
Where does a parasite produce sexually and asexually
Sexually > in mosquito
Asexually > in human
What can be produced sexually and asexually in fungi
Spores
