Prosthodontics L3 - what is dental surveying Flashcards
what is the name of this instrument
parallelometer - it is sometimes referred to as a surveyor
why would you use this instrument
to do survey lines
why is it important to carry out surveys on the dental cast
if a survey analysis is done accuratley, we can locate and identify areas on teeth where suitable contours exist to hold a denture in place (desirable undercuts)
what are undesirable undercuts
undesirable undercuts are areas of contour which would prevent the denture fully seating, which needs to be eliminated or reduced
which image is showing a soft tissue or bony undercut on the lingual aspect
the bottom image
The portion of a tooth that lies between its height of contour (survey line) and the gingivae.
This area of the abutment tooth must be suitable for the placement of a retentive clasp terminal. In order to escape the undercut the clasp would be forced to flex and thus generate retention.
the above is a definition of what
undercut
The area of an abutment tooth or soft tissue across which a unit of the removal partial denture must pass without interference and therefore must be blocked out before the master cast is duplicated. The use of a surveyor produces a surface which is parallel to the proposed point of insertion
