Programming and Planning Flashcards
What is concurrent delay?
One or more delay events at same time. Caused by different parties on project.
What is a critical path?
Critical path is the longest sequence of activities to successfully complete the project.
Overall reduction of programme is only possible if critical path activities can be reduced.
Benefits of critical path method?
Reduction in delays
Enables visualization of dependencies
Allows calculation of float
How would you produce a MASTER programme for a new project?
Understand purpose of programme and detail required.
Map all activities on the project including anticipated timescales to complete.
For front end activities this would be via the RIBA stages.
For construction activities I would draw on previous experience and timescales. The programme would need to be refined as the project continues.
What are the RIBA stages of work?
There are 8 stages:
Strategic definition (0)
Preparation and brief (1)
Concept design (2)
Spatial coordination (3)
Detailed design (4)
Manufacturing and construction (5)
Handover (6)
In use (7)
What are project milestones?
Task of zero duration that shows an important achievement or date in the programme.
What information does a construction programme typically show?
Construction activities and sequence
Duration of each activity
Interdependency of each activity
Key milestones
Critical path
float
start date and end date
What is programme float?
Amount of time an activity can be delayed without impacting critical path.
Programme contingency
Please provide some key examples of project milestones from your projects?
Completion of RIBA design stages
Planning permission
Tender process
contract appointment
preconstruction period
construction activities including topping out, commencement of fitout, commissioning
completion of works
snagging
handover
defects liability period
What is a dropline?
A form of reporting / tracking of construction progress.
A line is plotted against the completion of each task to show if the activity is behind, on, or ahead of programme.
This can be assessed against dependencies and float to inform any impact to critical path.
What is acceleration?
Where activities are completed quicker than outlined in the contract programme.
Additional costs for labour and plant to achieve depending on if this is client driven.
Examples of acceleration?
Increasing resource (labor and plant)
Increasing working hours (if permitted by Local Authority)
Resequencing or overlapping activities
manufacture off site
Difference between programmes and projects
Programmes are typically a series of projects.
Projects tend to have finite planned end dates.
What is an information release schedule?
Tells contractor when design information will be available.
What is an Information required schedule?
Contractor provides dates by when design information is required.
