Product development and innovation Flashcards
What has transport become ?
Larger, faster and more efficient.
What was transportation like in the 1990’s ?
There was an increase in the use of budget airlines, which tended to be short haul and flew to / from regional airports.
What was transportation like in the 2000’s ?
The A380 was invented, which was a double decker plane meaning that more passengers could be carried, and resulted in a reduction of services / cost efficient for airlines as they weren’t having to provide as many services to lots of smaller planes. However new infrastructure was needed at airports to facilitate, jet bridge, the correct runway length etc.
What was transportation like in the 2010’s ?
Greener aircraft became more used with new fuels being created. Dream liners were used which produced 20 percent less emissions than other types of planes and were for long haul flights. Here there is more responsible tourism and people are becoming more enviromentally aware.
What has happened to accommodation due to product development and innovation ?
It has become more sustainable with options such as glamping, yurts, tipis, bell tents etc. However Airbnb’s despite becoming more popular as they are flexible and tend to be an affordable alternative to hotels they are affecting some countries economies as people are reducing the amount of housing available for local residents, there might be a decline in the demand for hotels and so people can loose their jobs / reduce the amount available.
What has product development and innovation caused in the travel and tourism industry in terms of technology ? (advantages)
Increased use of online booking systems for holidays, an increased use of call centres to help customers with any issues they have with booking a holiday, where to go etc, use of apps to book holidays, look at reviews, e - tickets, contactless payments etc.
What are the disadvantages / issues with technology ?
Risk of fraud, It failures / issues, job losses due to technology being quicker, cheaper and more efficient, training people is expensive / takes time, crashes (no data, signal).
Due to technology what has happened to visitor attractions ?
They have become safer/ more aware of risks as technology has helped them to advance, accessible, using technology to improve new rides etc.
What are some examples of modern day train travel and how technology has caused this ?
faster (HS1 and HS2), Channel tunnel, Eurostar, TGU, Bullet train etc.
What are some disadvantages / issues with cruises ?
Not many ports can facilitate the size of the cruises and will have to invest in new / improved infrastructure, accessibility. Fuel costs will be expensive and the amount that they need / produce leads to environmental damage.
