What type of drug is stemetil?
Phenothiazine antiemetic
Stemetil acts on several neurotransmitter systems. What are they?
- Antidopamine action
- Alpha-adrenergic antagonism
- Potentials not-adrenaline
- Weak anticholingeric and antihistamine effects
- Weak seretonin antagonism
What is the indication for stemetil?
For the treatment (only) of nausea and vomiting from a variety of vestibular causes including: motion sickness, migraine, vertigo, and labyrinthitis
Stemetil adversely effects all body systems. What are those effects?
Gastro: constipation and dry mouth
Nervous system: drowsiness and extrapyrimidial symptoms
Cardio: hypotension, ECG changes (QT prolongation)
Respiratory: respiratory depression
What are the 7 contraindications of stemetil?
- KSAR to phenothiazines
- CNS depression
- Shock from any cause or circulatory compromise
- Pregnancy
- < 18 years
- Conjunction with IV amioderone
- Previous oral prochloroerazine in last 8 hours
What are the 5 precautions of stemetil?
- Renal dysfunction
- Parkinson’s
- Myasthenia gravis
- Epilepsy
- Elderly. Increased chance of dystonic reactions
What is the dose of stemetil?
12.5mg deep IMI
What is the special note with stemetil?
Pts should be TX due to extensive adverse effect profile
