What type of drug is atropine sulphate?
Parasympathetic blocking agent
What is the presentation of atropine?
600mcg/1ml
What are the 4 actions of atropine?
- Blocks the action of the vagus nerve on the heart
- Increases the rate of SA node
- Increases speed of conduction through the AV node
- Reduces the amount of secretions from some glands (ie tear and salivary)
What is the AP use for atropine?
Organophosphate poisoning/ spider bite with cholingeric symptoms (to increase heart rate irrespective of BP, and or assist airway management by reduction of excess salivation
What are the 7 adverse effects of atropine?
- Tachycardia
- Palpitations
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Confusion
- Urinary retention
- Increased temp (due to decrease in perspiration)
What is the contraindication for atropine?
KSAR
What are the two precautions of atropine?
- Glaucoma
2 aim not to increase heart rate over 100bpm
What is the adult and paed dose of atropine for organophosphate poisoning or spider bite?
10mcg/kg IM. Double each dose as required eg: 2mg > 4mg > 8mg
Continue to use even if BP Is not low
