What are the actions of ceftriaxone?
A
- Broad spectrum antibiotic- especially effective against gram negative (-) bacteria eg meningococcus
- Effective at crossing the blood brain barrier

What is the indication for ceftriaxone?
A
Suspected meningococcal disease in acutely I’ll patients

What are the 3 adverse effects of ceftriaxone?
A
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Diarrhoea
- Skin rash

Contraindications for ceftriaxone?
A
KSAR to cephalosporins

What is the the precaution for ceftriaxone?
A
20% if patients with penicillin allergy may be sensitive to ceftriaxone

What is the ceftriaxone dose for paediatrics and adults?
A
50mcg/kg to a total of 2g (IV preferred). Make up to 10ml with normal saline and five slowly over 2-4 minutes
