Principles of Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis
Maintenance of a constant internal environment despite internal or external changes
What is the bloods pH
7.35
Why does blood need to be at Ph 7.35
So that proteins in the blood do not denature
What happens if enzymes denature
They cannot catalyse reactions in the body
What can happen if water potential changes
It can cause cell damage
What happens if water potential is too high
Water will enter a cell causing the cell to burst
What happens if water potential is too low
Water will leave the cell and the cell will shrink
What does homeostasis ensure
That cells in the body can function effectively
What benefit does homeostasis bring to animals
Means they can live in a greater variety of habitats as they can survive a greater external change
