Plant responses to changes in the environment Flashcards
What is a stimuli
A detectable change in the external or internal environment of an organism that leads to a response from the organism
What are external stimuli
Anything outside organisms body (sunlight)
What are internal stimuli
Anything inside the body (hunger)
What does changing according to stimuli benefit
Allows organisms to avoid harmful external changes whilst also maintaining an optimal internal environment for metabolic reactions
How do plants respond to environmental changes
By producing chemicals or altering their growth
Define tropism
A tropism is a directional growth response in which the direction of the response is determined by the direction of the external stimulus
Define phototropism
When part of a plant grows in a particular direction in response to a light stimulus
Define geotropism
Part of a plant grows in a particular direction in response to the force of gravity
What is it called if a plant responds towards a stimulus
Positive trophic response
What is it called if a plant responds away from a stimulus
Negative trophic response
Describe gravity effect of roots
Positive geotropism
Describe effect of light on plant shoots
Positive phototropism
What is a chemotropism
When part of a plant grows in response to the location of chemicals
What is it called when a plant response is non-directional
Nastic response
How are plant responses controlled
Plant hormones as they don’t have a central nervous system
